چکیده
Asbestosis is defined as diffused interstitial fibrosis of the lung, as a consequence of exposure to asbestos fibres, often associated with pleural plaques. Diagnosis of asbestosis, according to the American Thoracic Society (2004) is based on the following criteria: 1. hystopathological or imaging demonstration of structural alterations compatible with asbestos-related disease; 2. previous asbestos exposure demonstrated by occupational or environmental anamnestic data, or by specific markers like pleural plaques or thickenings; 3. exclusion of other causes; 4. documented impairment of lung function. In some cases, moderate fibrosis can be present together with major respiratory impairment. Some cohort studies have shown asbestosis to be the cause of 12-20% of observed deaths, or even more (Lemen, 2005).

Asbestos-related Lung Diseases: A Brief Update
Health risks from asbestos exposures have been evaluated, considering past professional histories when exposures at workplaces were higher than today. A linear no-threshold (LNT) model has been applied, although its relevance is unproven. Fibers are often found in the lungs and pleura of deceased people. Fiber findings do not prove that a disease is caused by asbestos. It is reasonable to assum...

Background and aims : Asbestos minerals are divided into two main groups including serpentine and amphiboles and each has one or more subgroups. These minerals have been used in industrial products such as cement-asbestos sheet and pipe, brake shoe, clutch and insulation materials. Occupational and non - occupational exposures by this carcinogenic material have caused to develop several metho...
متن کاملAsbestos-Induced Gastrointestinal Cancer: An Update.
Asbestos-related diseases, such as malignancies and asbestosis, remain a significant occupational and public health concern. Asbestos is still widely used in many developing countries despite being a recognized carcinogen that has been banned over 50 countries. The prevalence and mortality from asbestos-related diseases continue to pose challenges worldwide. Many countries are now experiencing ...
متن کاملMedical monitoring of asbestos-exposed workers: experience from Poland
In Poland, the use of asbestos was banned in 1997 and asbestos plants have been closed since then. Despite their closure, cases of asbestos-related occupational diseases among former asbestos workers are still being recorded in the Central Register of Occupational Diseases. Between 2001 and 2014, there were 2726 asbestos-related illnesses, classified and reported as diseases associated with occ...
متن کاملAsbestos Presence in a Factory that Produced Asbestos-Containing Products
In 2007, research was carried out to determine the type and amount of asbestos fibers in a Croatian factory with a long history of making asbestos-containing products.Since the 1970s, asbestos fibres have been considered carcinogenic in humans i.e as a known cancer-causing agent. In the environment, asbestos fibres are inactive and naturally resist biodegradation. In time, fibres can only be gr...
متن کاملOccupational exposure to asbestos and cardiovascular related diseases: A meta-analysis.
Asbestos has become one of the leading causes of death among occupational workers in the world. The association between asbestos and cardiovascular disease is less reported. We performed a meta-analysis to quantify the association between asbestos exposure and the mortality of cardiovascular related diseases. We performed a systematic review in the PubMed database before December 2014. All coho...
